Suffering From Sciatica?
Can be a mouthful and a real pain in the butt and leg problem. First of all it is pronounced: “si-at-i-ka”.
What are some of the causes of sciatica?
A slip or fall to sitting on a billfold for long periods of time can cause irritation to the biggest nerve in your body, the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is composed of 5 nerve roots with 2 exiting between the last two lower back bones L4 & L5 and the other 3 off the sacrum inside the pelvis. The nerves exist the lower pelvis. The piriformis muscle runs across the nerve at the base of the pelvis and this can also cause nerve irritation. Degeneration of the discs can result in sciatica and the condition may be aggravated by pregnancy or wearing high heels. Basically anything that puts pressure or irritates the nerve can cause pain.
What are some of the symptoms that patients fell with sciatica?
True sciatica is a sharp shooting pain or a numbness and tingling running from the buttock down the leg into the foot. The pain or numbness must travel the full length of the leg and not stop at the knee or it is a different problem. You may experience weakness and have difficulty in moving your leg or this can make it difficult to stand up. Coughing, sneezing or sitting at the stool may cause pain. The pain can be severe and constant to infrequent and irritating.
What are some of the traditional treatments for sciatica?
40% of the population will get sciatica and it is typically treated with over the counter pain relievers. People see their medical doctor and receive a prescription for a muscle relaxant and in some instances a steroid injection is given. Your medical doctor may recommend physical therapy, along with the application of ice or heat.
What treatments does McCracken Chiropractic Clinic offer patients struggling with Scitica?
The most important thing is determining the cause of your problem. It will do you no good to merely cover up the pain with an over-the-counter pain reliever or muscle relaxant or even a cortisone shot. They are temporary fixes similar to turning off your fire alarm. You need to be concerned as to what is causing your problem and fix it before it causes more serious problems. Dr. McCracken can provide the fastest and safest pain reliever there is by using the Q1000 Cold Laser to speed healing 150 x’s without any of the side-effects of medications or injections. He may choose to use Interferential electronic muscle stimulation to decrease the pain. If swelling of the tissues is evident he may recommend use of a natural pain reliever which speeds healing and reduces the pain with no side effects. He will then work with you to determine the cause of your problem and recommend a specific treatment plan to correct your problem typically this involves the use of an advanced spinal adjustment using a Cox distraction table where specific, gentle pain relieving treatments are given without any twisting of the spine.
Is the problem gone when the pain is goes away?
That would be great if that were the case. Pain is only a warning sign that something is wrong. Just because the pain stops does not mean the problem is fixed. Similarly if you have a broken bone is it healed once the pain stops, the answer is no and the same holds true for sciatica.
What advice would Dr. McCracken give to someone with sciatica?
Seek the opinion of someone experienced in the treatment of sciatica. I have helped those suffering with sciatica since 1976 with excellent results. If you are suffering in pain and it is a new problem use ice for the first 48-72 hours. If this is a chronic problem then try alternating between ice and moist heat. You should then call and make an appointment for a no charge consultation and Spinal/Stress Screening to see if you would be a candidate for Cox distraction Spinal Adjustments. You must first find the cause of your sciatica.
